MLC swept by UW-Superior

NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College Knights softball team dropped a pair of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference softball games to the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Friday, falling 8-0 in both games.

In the noon opener, the Knights allowed two runs in the first, one in the third, two in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Jess Horn took the loss in the complete game, allowing 13 hits and no walks for seven earned runs.

MLC got singles in the opener from Horn, Chloe Koschnitzke, Sarah Yonkovich and Chloe Berg. Ellie Macal led the Superior bats, going 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs.

Samantha Swartz got the Game 1 win in a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out eight.

In the second game of the day, the score stayed the same, with the Yellowjackets this time scoring a pair of runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings.

Horn took the loss again in Game 2 in the circle in six innings, allowing 11 hits and no walks for four earned runs while striking out one. She also led the MLC bats, going 2 for 3, while Berg added a single.

Bella Garley took the win in the circle for the Yellowjackets in Game 2, allowing three hits and no walks while fanning 10 in six innings. Lily Hanson was 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Superior bats, while Peyton Bennett had two doubles and an RBI and Macal was 2 for 2 again with two RBIs.

Superior took the first game of this three-game series on Thursday 22-0.

MLC (0-16, 0-6) is at Northwestern for the start of a three-game series on Friday, with a single 4 p.m. game Friday and a doubleheader Saturday afternoon beginning at noon. The Yellowjackets (15-4, 3-0) travel to UW-Eau Claire for a doubleheader Wednesday.
