MANKATO — River Valley had a strong meet in the Tomahawk-Valley Indoor Track and Field Conference Championships Monday at Minnesota State Mankato’s Myers Field House, winning both the boys and girls side of the meet.
River Valley won the boys meet with a score of 111, followed by Loyola-Cleveland (104), Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (78), Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin (57), Wabasso (56), Lester Prairie (56) and Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther (35). On the girls side, River Valley led with 181 points, followed by Loyola-Cleveland (98), GFW (62), Wabasso (53), Lester Prairie (48), MCW/BO (34) and GHEC/T/ML (15).
For the River Valley boys, Gianluka Fernandez won the 200-meter (24.90) and placed third in the 55 (7.05), while Noah Christensen won the 400 (55.32) and Matthew Fernandez came in third in the 400 (59.83). Raul Rodriguez won the 800 (2:13.05), and Matthew Groebner placed second in the 1,500 (4:24.12), and Dylan Dewitt placed third in the 3,000 (10:32.26). The 4×400 relay team of Groebner, Lucas Hensch, Gianluka Fernandez and Christensen won for River Valley (3:43.18), as did the 4×800 team of Christensen, Matthew Fernandez, Dewitt and Groebner (8.47.29). Noah Christensen placed second in the pole vault (9-0) and Scott Sondag placed third (5-0).
For the River Valley girls, Brynne Ibberson placed second in the 400 (1:04.96), while Katie Thram placed second in the 800 (2:38.54). Marissa Pabst won the 1,500 (5:33.79) and Leah Kucera placed second in the 50-meter hurdles (9.74) and third in the 55-meter high hurdles (10.03). Millie Lax placed second in the 55-meter hurdles (9.72).The 4×400 relay team of Lydia Dauer, Skyla Dauer, Pabst and Marley Hewitt won for River Valley (4:37.98), as did the 4×800 team of Thram, Ali Almanza, Emmie McCone and Pabst (10:43.28).
Yuridia Fernandez won the shot put (30-9) and Liana Kimbourgh won the high jump (4-8). Lydia Dauer (7-0), Lax (7-0) and Julianne McCone (5-6) swept the pole vault, and Marley Hewitt placed second in long jump (14-1). Kucera won the triple jump for River Valley (30-2).

For the GFW boys, Easton Taylor won the 55-meter hurdles (8.88), while the 4×200 relay team of Garret Stegeman, Brayden Miller, Eric Herrera and Chris Ruiz pulled out a split-second victory over River Valley with a time of 1:45.25. The race came down to the final leg, with GFW’s anchor, Ruiz, pulling out the victory on the final turn.
“For the last leg, we were both neck and neck because we got the handoff at the same time,” Ruiz said. “We were neck and neck until about three-fourths of the race. I guess I had a better kick than him because I started gaping him. Then I won. It felt pretty good once I started gaping him. And the crowd was getting louder. It was sick.”
Dominic Krumwiede placed third in shot put (41-3.5) and second in high jump (5-7), while Easton Taylor won the long jump (18-0.5).
For the GFW girls, Kinley Bruns placed third in the 400 (1:09.42), while Lucy Dvorak placed third in the 800 (2:38.54). Madyson Steele placed second in the 3,000 (11.45.52) and Annie Wersal placed third in shot put (29-0.5). Trinity Stearns placed second in high jump (4-6), and Taylor Bauer placed third in long jump (13-0.5).
For the Wabasso boys, Nolan Leopold placed third in the 200 (25.61), while Andrew Morin won the 3,000 (9:58.97). Tyson Lightfoot took second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.97), and Zeke Olson placed third in triple jump (35-8.5).

For the Wabasso girls, the 4×200 relay team of Elsie Leopold, Aaliya Flowers, Liz Morin and Carly Fenger placed first (2:00.08), while Liz Morin won the long jump (15-0). Flowers (29-3.5) and Melany Kramer (28-7) took second and third in the triple jump.
