Area roundup: T-Birds, Wolverines open seasons with big wins

PREP BASEBALL

GFW 13, RCW 3 (6 innings)

FAIRFAX — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop started its season of baseball in a big way Tuesday at Memorial Field with a 13-3 nonconference win over Renville County West in six innings.

The Thunderbirds ended the game in six innings by the 10-run lead rule after scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Layton Uecker-Hamre got the win in three innings, allowing one hit and four walks for one earned run while fanning six. He also went 2 for 4 with an RBI at the plate.

Luke Bastian was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead the GFW bats, while Kaden Rieke was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Matthew Lee was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Will Bastian was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Owen Swenson added a hit and an RBI also for GFW, while Cole Kemkes had a hit.

Connor Peterson took the loss on the mound for RCW, allowing six hits and a walk for five earned runs while striking out two. Jacob Savig was 1 for 2 with two RBIs to lead RCW at the plate.

GFW (1-0) is at Springfield for a 4:30 p.m. Tomahawk Division game Thursday.

Sibley East 21,

St. Clair 2 (5 innings)

GAYLORD — The Sibley East Wolverines rolled past St. Clair 21-2 in five innings of a South Central Conference baseball game on Tuesday at Walsh Field.

The game ended in the fifth inning due to the 15-run lead rule. The Wolverines scored five runs in the fifth.

Carson Schmid led the Wolverines at the plate, going 3 for 5 with a double and four RBIs, while Caden Willmsen was 2 for 2 with three RBIs, Quintin DeVlaeminck was 2 for 3 with four RBis and Riley Bussler was 2 for 4. Evan Pautsch also added a double, two RBIs and four runs scored for the Wolverines, while Nate Colling connected for a solo home run, the first varsity homer of his career.

In addition to Schmid’s big day at the plate, he also got the win on the mound, going three innings and allowing three hits and four walks for one earned run while striking out two.

Sibley East (1-0) hosts Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial in another conference game at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Springfield girls 220, Madelia 229, LCWM Inc.

LCWM boys 173, Springfield 180, GFW 210, Madelia 217

ST. JAMES — The Springfield girls golf team won a nonconference golf triangular at the St. James Golf Club on Tuesday with a total score of 220, defeating Madelia (229) and Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial (Inc.).

The Springfield boys played three teams in St. James Tuesday, falling short and taking second to LCWM (173) with a score of 180. The GIbbon-Fairfax-Winthrop boys finished third (210), while Madelia took fourth (217).

Mavri Winkelmann was the girls’ medalist, shooting a 48 to finish ahead of Madelia’s Katherine Devlaeminck (51) and Katie Bocock (55). Springfield’s Kynslee Kastner tied for third with Bocock, while Springifield’s Ava Lipetzky took fifth (56).

For the boys, Springfield senior Braiden Davis carded a 40 to finish as the boys medalist, while LCWM’s Easton Rode, Charlie Gengler and Carson Kettner all tied for second with a 43. LCWM’s Brenden Smit took fifth (44), while Springfield’s Dylan Simonson (45) and Erik Davis (46) took sixth and seventh, respectively. GFW’s top golfer was Carson Lee, who shot a 49 to tie for ninth with Springfield’s Tayte Zihlke. Madelia’s top boys golfer Andre Afzelius, who shot a 50 for 11th place.
