NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral defeated BOLD 8-0 on Friday in a nonconference softball game at Harmon Park.

Jayde Altermatt pitched a strong game for the Greyhounds to earn the shutout. She pitched all seven innings and allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out 15. She struck out all three batters she faced in the first, third and fifth innings.

The victory improved Cathedral’s record to 2-2 after it dropped its first two games of the season.

Jaylin Hartness led the Greyhounds at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a solo homer, while Brynn Wilfahrt was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Hartness hit the first pitch that she saw into left field in the bottom of the second inning. Shay Wilfahrt came in as a courtesy runner and scored on Abbey Hillesheim’s double to center field. Abbey Hillesheim scored on Brynn Wilfahrt’s double to have Cathedral up 2-0.

Hartness clobbered the first pitch that she saw from BOLD in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hartness’ no-doubt-about-it swing sent the ball over the left-center-field fence for a home run and 3-0 advantage.

Cathedral continued its run production in the bottom of the fifth inning. It took advantage of a bad inning by the Warriors. BOLD had some mental errors that Cathedral took advantage of for two more runs and a 5-0 lead. Cathedral ran the bases more aggressively and showed its confidence in scoring runs. Ava Brennan scored the first run of the inning Ava Schmid scored the second run.

Madelyn Haala hit the ball between second and third base into left field for a leadoff single. Abbey Hillesheim reached on an error and scored on a sacrifice. Brynn Wilfahrt’s double brought Haala home and Brynn Wilfahrt scored on a passed ball for the Greyhounds’ final run of the contest.

“Yesterday’s win [over Lester Prairie gave us] confidence which carried over into today’s game, Cathedral head coach Jamie Kuehn said. “Everything worked today.”

She also noted that collectively, the Greyhounds were able to hit the ball well and was pleased with Altermatt’s pitching performance.

Cathedral (2-2) will host a doubleheader on Monday against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart.
