Weekend area roundup: Greyhounds score 36 runs in doubleheader sweep

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral downed Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 11-1 in six innings of a Game 1 Tomahawk Division baseball doubleheader before earning a 25-5 win in five innings in Game 2 at Mueller Park on Saturday.

The Greyhounds ended the day and sweep with 18 runs in the fifth inning of Game 2.

In Game 1, Cathedral was led by Colin Anderson, who was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, while Joey Schugel was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Jake Finstad got the win in six innings of work, allowing three hits and no walks for an unearned run while striking out eight.

GFW got a single each in Game 1 from Owen Swenson, Owen Ahlbrecht and Cole Kemkes. Layton Uecker-Hamre took the loss in five innings, allowing four hits and a walk for two earned runs while striking out 12.

In Game 2, Cathedral saw Josh Forstner go 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, while Finstad was 4 for 6 with a triple, a double and six RBIs. Alex Portner was 3 for 4 with four RBIs, Caleb Forstner was 3 for 6 with an RBI, Anderson was 2 for 2 and Elijah Rieser was 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs. Elliott Schabert was also 2 for 5 with a double and four RBIs for Cathedral. Caleb Forstner got the win for the Greyhounds on the mound in five innings, allowing eight hits and three walks for four earned runs while striking out five.

GFW was led at the plate in Game 2 by Kaden Rieke, who was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, while Luke Bastian was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Rieke took the mound loss in 4 1/3 innings, allowing 13 hits and four walks for 11 earned runs.

Springfield 11, Hayfield 7

AUSTIN — Springfield defeated Hayfield 11-7 in a nonconference baseball game on Saturady.

Adiel Trevino earned the win for Springfield, striking out six while allowing one run on one hit and four walks in three innings. Kade Nachreiner made the start for the Tigers, striking out one and allowing three runs on four hits in three innings. At the plate for Springfield, Jackson Ludewig was 2 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs, while Kadyn Anderson had a hit and three RBIs. Brecken Heiling added a hit and an RBI.

Springfield (5-0) travels for a doubleheader against Lester Prairie on Tuesday.

New Ulm 3,

St. Peter 2 (10 innings)

ST. PETER — New Ulm downed St. Peter 3-2 in 10 innings in a Big South Conference baseball game on Friday.

Tanner Backer earned teh win for New Ulm, striking out five and allowing one run on two hits in three innings. Candon Briggs made the start, striking out four and allowing one run on seven hits in seven innings. At the plate for New Ulm, Dirk Haynes was 2 for 5 with two RBIs, while Zach Hubbard was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Kyle Albrecht added a hit and an RBI for the Eagles.

New Ulm (3-0) hosts Belle Plaine on Tuesday.

PREP SOFTBALL

New Ulm 1, Eden Prairie 0

EDEN PRAIRIE — New Ulm topped Eden Prairie 1-0 in a nonconference softball game on Saturday.

Ramsey Hopp got the win in the circle, striking out nine while allowing six hits and two walks in a complete game shutout. Hopp and Schmeising each earned a double at the plate, while Berkley Wilfhart had an RBI and Hadley Batt scored a run. Natalie Fischer, Addison Hage, Mya Hornick and Kenzie Enter each added a hit.

New Ulm (3-0) hosts Mankato East on Monday.

PREP GOLF

Eagles boys take 2nd

in Marshall

MARSHALL — The New Ulm Eagles boys golf team took second out of six teams at the 18-hole Marshall Invitational on Saturday, scoring a 318 to finish behind Marshall, which had a 308.

Marshall’s Luke Ehlers was the medalist with a 71, while Eagles sophomore Mason Buegler carded a 72 to take second. New Ulm also saw senior Jaxon Buegler shoot a 76 to tie for third, while senior teammate Brecken Neuman and junior teammate Brayden Wendinger both shot an 85 to tie for 15th. New Ulm senior Brody Wenner finished just outside of the top four New Ulm boys spots with an 86 for 18th.

The New Ulm girls also competed at the invite out of four teams with an incomplete score. The Marshall girls won with a 366, with Tigers junior Dayton Webskowski shooting an 82 to finish as the medalist.

New Ulm senior Rory Gieseke shot a 111 for 12th, while junior teammates Lillian Kral shot a 122 for 19th and Chloe Kelley shot a 142 for 21st.
