Area roundup: New Ulm softball team races past Owatonna
PREP SOFTBALL
New Ulm 13, Owatonna 3
OWATONNA — New Ulm got plenty of offense to go with a strong pitching performance from Ramsey Hopp on Monday as the Eagles downed Owatonna 13-3 in a nonconference softball game.
Hopp pitched all seven innings in the win, allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out 11. She also was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
Berkley Wilfahrt led the Eagles at the plate, going 4 for 4 with three RBIs and three stolen bases, while Lauren Schmiesing was 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and a walk and Gracie Baker was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Addison Hage was 2 for 4 with two stolen bases also for New Ulm, while Maddie Backer was 1 for 2 with a double, three walks and two stolen bases and Miley Flor was 1 for 1 with an RBI.
New Ulm (4-0) hosts Marshall in a Big South Conference game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Lester Prairie 6, St. Mary’s 2
SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s fell to Lester Prairie 6-2 on Monday in a Tomahawk Division softball game.
Taylor Mathiowetz took the complete-game loss for the Knights, striking out eight while allowing eight walks and seven hits. She also got one of the Knights’ two hits in the game, a triple, while Sidney Tauer also tripled.
Reese Hoffmann added an RBI for the Knights, who stranded eight runners, while Josie Helget had a stolen base.
Miranda Mallak got the win the circle for the Bulldogs, striking out 11 while walking four.
St. Mary’s (2-4) hosts New Ulm Cathedral in a doubleheader on Thursday.
BLHS 1, Springfield 0 (8 innings)
SPRINGFIELD — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart broke a scoreless tie in the eighth inning and held off Springfield in the bottom of the inning for a 1-0 win in a Tomahawk Division softball game Monday.
Regan Beadell took the loss in all eight innings in the circle, allowing five hits and no walks for one unearned run. She struck out 12. Emma Hauger doubled to lead Springfield, while Teagan Steffl added a single for the Tigers’ other hit.
Chloe Schultz got the win for BLHS in the circle, going all eight innings and allowing two hits and a walk while fanning five. Hallie Best led BLHS at the plate, going 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Springfield (3-5, 2-5) hosts Wabasso in a doubleheader on Tuesday, while BLHS (4-3, 2-2) hosts Sleepy Eye in a softball doubleheader at Hector City Field on Thursday.
Wabasso 16, GFW 1 (4 innings)
WABASSO — Wabasso routed Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 16-1 in four innings of a Tomahawk Division softball game on Monday.
The game ended in the fourth due to the 15-run lead rule.
Aylah Jenniges had the big bat for the Rabbits on the day as she finished 4 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs. She also got the win in three innings of work, allowing two hits and no walks for no runs while recording three strikeouts.
GFW got its hits from Ashlynn Hubred, Laura Schafer and Ellie Weber. Ellison Fitzpatrick took the loss in three innings, allowing eight hits and three walks for nine earned runs while striking out five.
PREP BASEBALL
Springfield 11, Dawson-Boyd 1 (5 innings)
SPRINGFIELD — Springfield defeated Dawson-Boyd 11-1 in five innings in a nonconference baseball game on Monday.
Noah Neperman earned the win for Springfield, striking out nine while allowing one run on one hit and three walks. At the plate, Kade Nachreiner was 3 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Noah Neperman and Jackson Ludewig each had two hits and three RBIs. Russell Beers had a hit and three RBIs, while Adiel Trevino had a hit and an RBI.
Springfield (8-0) travels for a doubleheader against Wabasso on Thursday.
St. Mary’s 12, Lester Prairie 10
LESTER PRAIRIE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Lester Prairie 12-10 in a Tomahawk Division baseball game on Monday.
Talan Helget picked up the win for the Knights, striking out four while allowing seven runs, four earned, on five hits allowed in four innings. Kessler Severson earned the save, striking out one in one scoreless and hitless inning.
At the plate for St. Mary’s, Landry Folkens was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, while Jack Windschitl and Merrick Mathiowetz each had two hits and two RBIs. Talan Helget had two hits and an RBI, while Tyler Mathiowetz was 2 for 5 with two runs scored. Kessler Severson added a triple and an RBI, while Wyatt Pollard had a hit and an RBI.
St. Mary’s (3-2, 2-2) travels to play Wabasso on Tuesday.
MVL 6, GHEC/T/ML 2
TRUMAN — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 6-2 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover game on Monday.
Kaden Peterson earned the win for MVL, striking out 12 while allowing two hits and no runs over six innings while walking three. At the plate for the Chargers, Peterson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Connor Bode, Jacob Kramer and Kyan Kube each added a hit. Rogan Scriver added an RBI.
MVL (5-2) travels to play Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial on Tuesday.
GFW 11, Wabasso 1 (5 innings)
WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop held Wabasso to one hit while ending things early with a two-run fifth to win 11-1 on Monday in a Tomahawk Division baseball game.
GFW had eight hits and one error, while the Rabbits had five errors.
Layton Uecker-Hamre was 3 for 4 with a triple to lead GFW, while Owen Swenson was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Matthew Lee was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Cole Kemkes was 1 for 3 with two RBIs also for GFW.
Uecker-Hamre got the win in 4 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and two walks for one unearned run while striking out six.
Wabasso’s lone hit came off the bat of Caden Frericks on a double. Zach Skoblik took the mound loss in 2 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and two walks for four earned runs while striking out two.
GFW (2-6, 1-4) hosts Lester Prairie for a Tomahawk doubleheader on Thursday, while Wabasso (1-5, 0-4) is at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s for a Tomahawk game Tuesday.

MVL/NUC boys, girls take fifth at St. Peter meet
ST. PETER — Both the boys and girls teams for Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral placed fifth at a meet in St. Peter, with the boys scoring a 50.5 and the girls scoring a 57.
Marshall won the boys’ side of the meet with a 162, while St. Peter won the girls’ side with a 219. Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop placed sixth in the boys with a 27, while the girls placed sixth with a 42.5.
For the MVL/NUC boys, Josh Bentler placed first in the 100-meter dash (11.44), while Levi Johnson plced fourth in the 200 (24.95). Austin Vee placed fifth in the 800 (2:16.25), while Jeremy Feistner placed fourth in the 3,200 (10:54.92). Micah Horak and Ethan Schauland tied for second (5-3) and Eli Schauland tied for fifth (5-3) in the high jump, with Ethan Schauland also taking fifth in pole vault (10-0).
For the MVL/NUC girls, Kamryn Davey (16.58), Claudia Weisensel (16.76) and Avery Freier (17.22) took third, fourth and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles, with Weisensel taking fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (50.66). Jennarae Bates placed third in the shot put (30-4.5), and Avery Hopp took fifth in the high jump (12-10.5). Davey placed first in the triple jump (32-10.75).
For the GFW boys, Easton Taylor placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.99), while Dominic Krumwiede placed fifth in shot put (41-10) and second in discus (142-5).
On the girls’ side for GFW, Kinley Bruns placed fifth in the 100 (13.52) and fourth in the 400 (1:02.96). Madyson Steele placed fourth in the 3,200 (13:18.32), while Annie Wersal placed fifth in shot put (30-1.5) and first in discus (107-11). Trinity Stearns tied for fifth in high jump (4-6) and Kelby Bruns placed third in long jump (13-6.5).
