LAKE CRYSTAL — Minnesota Valley Lutheran shut down Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial 14-0 in five innings Tuesday in a South Central Conference baseball game.

Connor Bode led MVL at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two RBIs, while Brennan Bendix was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Seth Schmidt was 2 for 3.

Josh Vander Plas got the shutout win in five innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out six.

MVL (6-2) is at Sleepy Eye on Thursday for a nonconference game.

St. Mary’s 5, Wabasso 4

WABASSO — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Wabasso 5-4 in a Tomahawk Division baseball game on Tuesday.

Merrick Mathiowetz earned the win for St. Mary’s, striking out nine while allowing two earned runs on one hit and four walks in five innings pitched. Wyatt Pollard earned the save, striking out three and allowing one earned run on three hits and one walk in two innings.

At the plate for St. Mary’s, Mathiowetz was 3 for 4 with a run scored, while Landry Folkens was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Michael Balko and Talan Helget each added a hit and an RBI.

Calvin Hanna took the loss for Wabasso, striking out two while allowing one earned run on four hits. At the plate, Jayden Remiger and Drew Kemp each hit a double, with Kemp adding an RBI, while Cason Olson had a hit and two RBIs.

St. Mary’s (4-2, 3-2) plays a doubleheader at New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday, while Wabasso (1-5, 0-4) hosts a doubleheader against Springfield next Tuesday.

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye downed Redwood Valley 5-0 in a nonconference baseball game on Tuesday.

Kaden Klein earned the win for Sleepy Eye, striking out eight while allowing no runs on six hits in a complete game. At the plate, Cody Schultz was 2 for 2 with a triple and an RBI, while Gavin Strong was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Carson Uecker had a hit and an RBI for Sleepy Eye.

Sleepy Eye (3-3) hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Thursday.

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye cruised by Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 14-4 in five innings in a Tomahawk Division softball game on Tuesday.

Taylor Berkner was the winning pitcher, striking out six in 2 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings. Paige Haala made the start, striking out two and giving up four runs, none earned, on one hit. At the plate, Haala was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Callie Evers was 2 for 2 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Berkner was 2 for 4 with four RBIs and a run scored, while Kenley Jensen was 2 for 2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Lauren Schafer had the lone hit for GFW.

Sleepy Eye (7-1, 5-1) plays a doubleheader at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday. GFW (0-6, 0-6) plays a doubleheader at Lester Prairie on Thursday.

JWP 10, Madelia 5

JANESVILLE — Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton defeated Madelia 10-5 in a nonconference softball game on Tuesday.

Peyton Bruns took the loss for Madelia, striking out three and allowing three earned runs on five hits in three innings. Makayla Sorenson pitched three innings, striking out three and allowing five earned runs on five hits. At the plate, Madelyn Lehman was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Kellie Koberoski had a hit and two RBIs. Bruns added a hit and an RBI.

Madelia (2-5) plays in a tournament at Caswell Park in North Mankato on Friday and Saturday.

LAKE CRYSTAL — Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 10-0 in five innings and 21-1 in four innings in a South Central Conference softball game on Tuesday.

Nora Grace Otto took the loss in Game 1, striking out one and allowing 10 runs on 11 hits. MVL had no hits in the game.

Norah Rodewald took the loss in Game 2, striking out two and allowing 21 runs on 23 hits. At the plate, Morgan Black had the only hit of the game, while Karlee Prahl had an RBI.

MVL (3-7, 2-2) hosts St. James Area on Thursday.

SPRINGFIELD — Wabasso and Springfield split a Tomahawk Division softball doubleheader on Tuesday, with the Rabbits winning Game 1 17-7 and the Tigers winning Game 2 14-7.

Aylah Jenniges earned the win in Game 1, striking out two while allowing seven runs on 11 hits. At the plate for Wabasso, Sara Carlson was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Aliva Olson was 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Jalyn Louwagie took the loss for Springfield in Game 1, striking out one while allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits in four innings. At the plate, Jasmine Novotny and Abby Groebner each had three hits, while Emma Hauger had two hits and four RBIs. Sophie Mude added two hits for the Tigers.

Regan Beadell earned the win in Game 2 for Springfield, striking out eight while allowing seven runs, five earned, on six hits. At the plate, Novotny was 3 for 6 with five RBIs and tow runs scored, while Groebner and Makalya Winkelmann each had two hits and an RBI. Teagan Steffl added a hit and an RBI.

Jenniges took the loss in Game 2 for Wabasso, striking out two while allowing 14 runs, one earned, on 11 hits. At the plate, Olson was 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Camryn Irlbeck, Summer Strand and Carlson each had a hit and an RBI.

Wabasso (7-2, 4-2) hosts a doubleheader against Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Monday. Springfield (4-6, 3-6) plays at Sleepy Eye next Tuesday.

SANBORN — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran boys defeated Wabasso 179-272 while the Wabasso girls defeated MVL 237-251.

MVL’s James Osterman won the boys’ side of the meet, scoring a 42, followed by MVL’s Nathaniel Lukasek (45), Phillip Lukasek (46), Owen Birkholz (48) and Cooper Pavelchik (46). Wabasso was led by Brayden Guetter with a 61.

Wabasso’s Alexis Jensen won the meet witha 50, followed by MVL’s Carmella Joshi (60), Eden Grubbs and Wabasso’s Heidi Foy (61) and a three-way tied between Wabasso’s Brooklynn Beadell and Braylin Kampsen and MVL’s Scarlet Heldt.

Springfield boys 173, SEU 174, RRC 216

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield boys golf team won a meet over Sleepy Eye United and Red Rock Central on Tuesday, leading the field with a 173. SEU followed with a 174 and RRC trailed with a 216.

Springfield’s Erik Davis led all golfers, shooting a 39 on the day. He was followed by Springfield’s Braiden Davis and SEU’s Nolan Kucera (41), SEU’s Isaac Christensen (42), SEU’s Anders Coulson (43), Springfield’s Dylan Simonson (44), Springfield’s Blake Zihlke (47), SEU’s Blaine Arneson (48), Springfield’s Grant Kuehn (49) and SEU’s George Schwint (51).

Cathedral boys take

2nd in St. James

ST. JAMES — The New Ulm Cathedral boys golf team finished second out of four teams in a nonconference golf meet in St. James Tuesday, finishing with a 174.

Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial finished first with a 169, while St. Clair took third (188) and Madelia took fourth (209).

Cathedral’s Owen Strei was the medalist with a 37, while LCWM’s Henry Kennedy shot a 39 for second and Madelia’s Andre Afzelius shot a 42 to tie for third with LCWM’s Jackson Lynch, Easton Rode and Brenden Smit. LCWM’s Jordan Goettlicher and Carson Kettner shot 43s to tie for seventh, while Cathedral’s Joe Gillis and Will Marti shot 45s with St. Clair’s JJ Cumberland to tie for 10th.

The girls’ side of the meet was won by St. Clair (216), while Madelia turned in a 220 for second and Cathedral took third with a 256. LCWM was incomplete.

Madelia’s Katherine DeVlaeminck shot a 46 to finish as the co-medalist with St. Clair’s Celia Johnson, while St. Clair’s Adyson Fox shot a 54 for third, Madelia’s Katie Bocock shot a 55 for fourth and Madelia’s Genesis Robles carded a 57 to tie for fifth with LCWM’s Stella Munson. Cathedral’s Elissa Ries shot a 58 to tie for seventh with St. Clair’s Brooklyn Meng and Hannah Olson, while Cathedral’s Emma Hoffmann carded a 60 to take 10th.

Cedar Mountain boys, girls compete at Oakdale

BUFFALO LAKE — The Cedar Mountain boys and girls golf teams competed with Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Division golf meet.

BLHS did not have any complete teams, while the Cedar Mountain boys shot a 172 and the girls shot a 235.

Cedar Mountain’s Carson Schiller was the boys medalist with a 38, while teammates Blake Schueller and Thomas Dahmes each carded a 42 to tie for second. BLHS’s Evan Pierce (47) and Brady Rudeen (49) took fourth and fifth, respectively.

The girls medalist was BLHS’s Ava Ahlbrecht, who shot a 49 to finish just ahead of teammate Elizabeth Ovitt (50). Cedar Mountain’s Claire Sherman shot a 55 for third, while teammates Bailey Woodford (56) and Jaylyn Welter (58) took fourth and fifth, respectively.

St. James 5, New Ulm 2

ST. JAMES — New Ulm fell to St. James in a Big South Conference boys tennis meet on Tuesday 5-2.

Getting wins for New Ulm were Dan Brownfield and Isaac Dittmer. Brownfield won at No. 3 singles over Cohen Dannhoff, winning 3-6, 7-5, 10-7, while Dittmer defeated Tristan Shores at No. 4 singles 7-2, 6-4.

New Ulm hosts Worthington on Thursday.
