NEW ULM — Despite dropping the first game of a Tomahawk Division baseball doubleheader 4-2 Wednesday, New Ulm Cathedral responded in the second game by jumping out to a 13-1 lead after three innings on the way to a 17-2 win over Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at Johnson Park.
The second game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run lead rule.
Colin Anderson got the win for the Greyhounds (7-1, 5-1). He scattered six hits while striking out five.
Michael Balko took the loss for the Knights (5-3, 4-3). He went 2 1/3 innings and was charged with nine runs.
Anderson and Alex Portner each had three hits for Cathedral in Game 2, with Elliot Schabert driving in four runs.

Talan Helget had three hits for St. Mary’s in Game 2.
“I thought that our kids responded well,” Cathedral head coach Alan Woitas said. “Things did not go the way we wanted them to in Game 1 — credit to their kids, they made a lot of nice plays, threw strikes and did not give up many free bases. But in Game 2 we were able to score four [runs] right away and then add three. Credit to our kids.”
The Greyhounds jumped out to that 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an Anderson RBI single, followed by a Schabert two-run double. A Joey Schugel groundout added another run.
The Knights scored a run in the bottom of the inning on an error before the Greyhounds came back with three more in the top of the second. An error, an Anderson single and a Schabert sacrifice fly made it a 7-1 contest.
Cathedral sent 11 men to the plate in the third and pushed across six more runs for a 13-1 lead.
Cathedral added four more runs in the top of the fifth for a 17-2 lead.
“We had 11 stolen bases in that [second] game,” Alan Woitas said. “We have a lot of team speed and Colin did a nice job on the mound for us again and Jake threw well in Game 1 for us after he settled in after that first inning.”
And it would be a three-run top of the first for St. Marys that right-hander Tyler Mathiowetz carried for the Game 1 win. He went six innings as he scattered two runs on four hits, striking out two. Kessler Severson tossed the seventh inning.
Finstad took the loss, permitting four runs on eight hits but only three hits and one run in the final six innings.
Helget and Merrick Mathiowetz each had two hits for St. Mary’s, with Tyler Mathiowetz helping his own cause with two RBIs.
“Tyler threw strikes and we made plays defensively, put the ball in play and made things happen early,” Knights head coach Bruce Woitas said. “We got up early and it was a great game by both teams.”
The Knights scored those three runs in the first on a Helget double, a single by Tyler Mathiowetz and doubles from Merrick Mathiowetz and Kessler Severson.
Cathedral plated single runs in the third on and error and a run in the fifth on a Finstad run-scoring single.
The Knights added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a Tyler Mathiowetz sacrifice fly.
Cathedral travels to Wabasso for a 5 p.m. Tomahawk game Tuesday, while St. Mary’s returns to New Ulm to take on Minnesota Valley Lutheran in nonconference action at 5 p.m. Friday at Mueller Park.
