Eagles’ comeback bid falls short against Tigers

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Eagles trailed by six going into the sixth inning Monday, but they brought it within two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

With the bases loaded and two outs, however, the Eagles were unable to bring in the tying runs and lost 11-9 to the Marshall Tigers in a Big South Conference baseball game at Mueller Park.

The Eagles had two errors but were able to have a total of 10 hits. The hitting was led by Dirk Haynes, Levi Hopp and Cohen Domeier, who each had two hits.

Marshall’s bats were hot with a total of 12 hits led by Chase Alcorn, who had four hits and two RBIs.

Tanner Backer got the start for the Eagles, pitching into the third inning after allowing six hits and four walks for five earned runs while striking out two. Kolton Achman pitched the final five innings for New Ulm, allowing six hits and two walks for three earned runs while striking out four.

Owen Kesteloot started the game on the mound for the Tigers, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing six hits and six walks for four earned runs while striking out four.

The game started with a first pitch single for Andrew Stelter, who was later brought in by Chase Alcorn to bring the score to an early 1-0 lead. Marshall’s second run came in the first with a bases-loaded walk, bringing in Chase Alcorn.

The Eagles scored their first run in the bottom of the second with Kyle Albrecht grounding into a fielder’s choice to Joshua Kraft the third basemen bringing in Levi Hopp. The Tigers scored three in the third, starting with Eli Alcorn tripling in Chase Alcorn. The next batter Liam Kruse brought in Eli Alcorn with a pop up single over shortstop Ryan Rathmann’s head. The last run of the innings was brought by Cooper Mensink with a flyout to center field allowing Liam Kruse to tag up bringing the score to 5-1 Tigers.

In the bottom of the third, Rathmann hit a ground ball to first basemen Braxton Koster, causing an error to bring in two runs to bring the score within two. Marshall scored another in the fourth inning on an error to bring the score to 5-2.

The next runs came in the top of the sixth, with Marshall scoring three, highlighted by a Cooper Mensink triple that brought in Kruse and made the score 8-2.

The Eagles got going in the bottom of the sixth, started off by Dirk Haynes bringing in Domeier with a fly-ball single to center. Ben Alfred followed Haynes with another line drive to center bringing in Zach Hubbard. Owen Castleman singled in Haynes with a ground ball into left field. The last run was brought in by Levi Hopp with a hard-hit ground ball that bounced of the mound and into center field to bring in Alfred and make the score 8-6.

Marshall widened the lead yet again with a triple by Chase Alcorn bringing in Samuel Thor. The very next play, Eli Alcorn got his second triple of the game to bring in the 10th run for the Tigers. Kruse ended the scoring with a fly out to center, allowing Shep Jensen to tag up and make the score 11-6.

The Eagles tried to battle back in the bottom of the seventh led by a single by Domeier and two walked batters to load the bases with no outs. Marshall walked in another by bringing in Domier to score for the Eagles. Dirk Haynes got hit by pitch to bring in another hitless run and have the game within three. The first out was caused by an Alfred flyout to center, allowing for Albrecht to tag up. With the tying runs on second, Marshall reliever Logan Phillippe struck out the final batter to end the game 11-9 Tigers.

New Ulm (10-5, 7-2) plays at Tri-City United on Tuesday, while Marshall (14-3, 10-2) Marshall is at Mankato West on Thursday.
